T

he Jakarta administration identified 837 areas affected by daily traffic congestion, but many of these areas had not been managed because of insufficient personnel and infrastructure shortcomings, said Jakarta Transportation Agency head Andri Yansyah in Jakarta on Thursday.

“Currently, we can only monitor 141 areas [with traffic gridlock] by deploying two or three personnel in each area to try and mitigate the congestion,” said Andris as reported by kompas.com, adding that currently his office had deployed 1,131 personnel to monitor traffic.

The administration gradually would increase field personnel numbers to 1,684 to monitor the traffic congestion and introduce more permanent measures under the Macro Transportation Formula (PTM) in three main ways, he added.

Firstly, is the improvement of public transportation services through the deployment of more buses along the bus rapid transit (BRT) network, which is integrated to other existing public transportation like commuter trains, the development of the mass rapid transit (MRT) and light rail transit (LRT) networks.

The second way is to develop more roads like the construction of the elevated road from Ciledug in West Jakarta to Jl. Tendean in South Jakarta and two other new elevated roads near the Semanggi cloverleaf in South Jakarta.

Finally, the electronic road pricing (ERP) will be prepared for major thoroughfares to replace the odd-even traffic policy that will be fully implemented later this month.

“All the activities are expected to fully be completed in 2018 and for the time being, we only rely on the field personnel to mitigate the traffic congestion in affected areas,” he added. (bbn)
