Greater Jakarta: Sandiaga weighs up possible running mates

G

ubernatorial candidate Sandiaga Uno has said he will propose either Jakarta secretary Saefullah, Jakarta deputy head for tourism affairs Sylviana Murni or Batang Regent Yoyok Riyo Sudibyo as his running mate.

Sandiaga, a businessman and Gerindra Party politician, has been nominated by his party to run in the Jakarta gubernatorial election on Feb. 15, 2017.

“We told Sandiaga to nominate his deputy candidate, but Sandiaga said the candidate must be discussed with members of the coalition,” Jakarta Legislative Council deputy speaker M. Taufik, who is also a Gerindra politician, said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The Kinship Coalition, which is made up of seven political parties — the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Gerindra, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Democratic Party, National Awakening Party (PKB), United Development Party (PPP) and National Mandate Party (PAN) — previously agreed to nominate a gubernatorial candidate to challenge Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s reelection.

Following the coalition’s establishment, however, the PDI-P said it was not fully committed as it was considering nominating Ahok as its gubernatorial candidate.

Meanwhile, Taufik said Bojonegoro Regent Suyoto was also considered but was not ready to be nominated for the role of Jakarta deputy governor.

Gerindra has secured the support of at least two parties — the PKB and the Democrats — that have expressed their commitment to Sandiaga’s nomination, while other parties have not yet agreed on who should be the coalition’s gubernatorial candidate.
