ational Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian has claimed he himself ordered legal action against Bali Police narcotics director Sr. Comr. Franky Haryanto over alleged extortion.

Tito says he made the order right after he received information about allegations of extortion committed by Franky on several drug suspects

“The investigation process in Bali was based on my order to the National Police’s internal affairs division [Propam] to monitor the case internally,” he said as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta on Thursday.

Tito also asserted that he would never make a foul of any internal violations, especially those related with drugs.

Propam’s investigation into Franky’s case is still ongoing.

National Police policy analyst Sr. Comr. Rikwanto earlier said the initial findings of their investigation indicated alleged extortion committed by Franky.

“We found indications [of extortion],” said Rikwanto.

As earlier reported, Franky was suspected to have extorted several suspects allegedly involved in seven drug cases of possession under 0.5 gram. Apart from the extortions, Franky was also reported for his alleged involvement in skimming funds from his directorate’s allocated budget, in which Rp 50 million (US$3,807.21) in cash had been confiscated as evidence from a safe in his office.

After the arrest, Propam personnel searched Franky’s office. They also questioned several staff at Bali Police’s narcotics directorate. (liz/ebf)
