A

remote village in East Kutai regency has become a target of drug distribution despite being 200 kilometers from the regency capital of Sangatta and 500 kilometers from Balikpapan, a major city in East Kalimantan province.

The police found 432 pil koplo (diazepam tablets), also known as Double LL, in a motorcycle and in the front yard of a church on Sunday night.

“This village is along the trans-Kalimantan route. The difference is that dealers usually go past this village but apparently they now see a potential market in rural areas,” East Kutai Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Rino Eko said in Sangatta on Tuesday.

The police raided villages earlier this week, looking for drugs, sharp weapons and liquor.

“We found a bunch of young people drinking in front of the Kongbeng district office,” Eko said.

When police searched them, they found 102 diazepam pills hidden under the seat of a motorcycle belonging to JI, 22.

After some investigation, JI led the police to AY, 19, who had hidden 150 pills in a plastic bag in the yard of a church. A further search revealed another 180 pills in small packages with three or six tablets per bag. (evi)
