akarta Governor Basuki Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has expressed confusion over inundation on many roads in South Jakarta, such as Jl. Trunojoyo, Jl. Kebayoran Baru and the elevated road above Jl. Casablanca.

He said on Wednesday that the roads had not been flood-prone in the past. “It is odd that the inundation moves from one area to another. Yesterday, Jl. Trunojoyo was inundated. The road had never been inundated before,” he said, adding that the Jakarta administration was studying the matter.

He said he was also confused that Kemang had become flood-prone after not experiencing inundation for the last two to three years.

Ahok said much of the flooding in northern Jakarta had been addressed in the last two to three years by installing water pumps. “As long as there is no high tide there will be no flooding in northern Jakarta,” he said as reported by kompas.com.

He said that the effort to mitigate flooding in South Jakarta, particularly by widening the Krukut River, had been delayed and the Jakarta administration was focusing on repairing drainage under many roads across the city.

Ahok stressed that people living on the banks of the Krukut River would be the next target of his administration’s attempt to mitigate flooding in Kemang and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, South Jakarta Mayor Tri Kurniadi said his office had started issuing eviction notices to the owners of buildings that would be affected by the flood mitigation project. Pop Hotel is among the buildings. (bbn)
