cting Jakarta Governor Sumarsono has stressed the importance of civil-servant neutrality prior to the Jakarta gubernatorial election on Feb. 15, 2017.

Sumarsono, who spoke at the Youth Pledge commemoration ceremony in his first task as acting governor on Friday, called on civil servants not to get involved in politics even though they were permitted to exercise their voting rights to elect one of the candidates.

"Bureaucracy is neutral and the elected pair will be the people's choice and the best choice for Jakarta," Sumarsono said in his remarks in reference to a law that requires government employees to remain neutral.

He further noted that sanctions against violators depended on the severity of misconduct, ranging from a delay in promotion to dishonorable dismissal.

"I think the rules are clear. Those who are seen to be involved in politics, either proven [as reported] in the media or in photographs, will be immediately called in," he told reporters.

During his first day as acting governor, Sumarsono attended meetings at the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) and the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and a plenary meeting at the Jakarta Legislative Council. (bbn)
