video of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak calling on Indonesians to protest the persecution of the Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar, not just Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, has gone viral on social media

It is thought that the video is from a speech the Prime Minister made on Sunday when addressing a mass gathering in Kuala Lumpur to call on Myanmar to end the killings of Rohingyas.

“I will ask President Jokowi to call on Indonesians to assemble [in protest of the persecution of Rohingyas]. Do not just protest against Ahok. The Rohingya should be defended in Indonesia. They have to assemble in Jakarta. Assemble!” Najib urged the crowd.

In his speech, the Prime Minister recognized that non-intervention was part of the code of conduct regulated by the ASEAN charter, but said that the regional block also supported human rights principles.

The killings of Rohingya have triggered protests from a number of Islamic organizations in Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority country in the world. More than a thousand people staged a rally in front of the Myanmar embassy in Central Jakarta to protest the prosecution of the Rohingya on Nov. 25.

However, even more people have attended recent protests against the governor of the capital, who is accused of committing blasphemy. An anti-Ahok rally last Friday was joined by thousands of people coming from regions all over the country. (dmr)
