The head of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) in Kupang, Hasanudin, told The Jakarta Post the earthquake occurred at 5:30 local time, or GMT+9, 59 kilometers northwest off the coast of Southwestern Sumba regency. The quake was felt in Waikabubak in West Sumba regency, Waibakul in Central Sumba regency and Waingapu in East Sumba regency.

Apolos Dewa Praingu, the village head of Hanagiaka in Umbu Ratu Nggay Barat in West Sumba told the Post said the earthquake was so strong that residents ran out of their homes.

“People were scared because the quake was quite strong. Houses were shaking and swinging for several seconds. I haven’t received any reports about whether there was damage or not,” Apolos said.

Apolos said the residents were remaining alert outside their houses in anticipation of aftershocks.  (evi)
