he National Police's central forensic laboratory (Puslabfor) conducted a case reconstruction on Thursday, which included the examination of remnants of the Zahro Express motor vessel (KM), to learn what had led it to be set ablaze, killing 23 people on board.
Six police investigators and four crew members of the ill-fated boat attended the case reconstruction, which was held in Muara Angke Port, North Jakarta. The crew members were involved in explaining what had happened to the boat during the incident.
In the reconstruction, investigators were seen taking several items from the boat that they might need to observe in the Puslabfor.
“We still cannot expose [what we have found so far]. We are still gathering pieces of evidence before we can conclude what caused the fire," Jakarta Police water police unit director Sr. Comr. Hero Bachtiar told reporters after the reconstruction in Muara Angke.
Zahro Express caught fire before it exploded on Sunday morning during its travel from Muara Angke Port to Tidung Island in Thousand Islands regency. Authorities reported 130 survived while the body of one out of 17 passengers reportedly missing had been found on Wednesday.
It was suspected the fire in the boat came from the boat’s engine room, but the police said investigation was underway and there was not yet any conclusion about what had caused the fire. (ebf)
