Election trail: Chinese-Indonesian wins in Banjarnegara

W

in Cin, popularly known as Budi Sarwono, a Chinese-Indonesian businessman from Banjarnegara, Central Java, was elected regent on Wednesday, compensating for his defeat in an election five years ago.

Running alongside his deputy Syamsudin, Win Cin secured 54 percent of the vote, far outnumbering his two rivals. Win Cin suffered a defeat in the 2013 Banjarnegara election when he ran as an independent candidate.

“We express our thanks to all the people who have given us a mandate to lead Banjarnegara,” Win Cin said on Thursday following the release of the quick-count results that indicated his victory.

The Win Chin-Syamsudin ticket won 282,531 votes and was backed by the Golkar Party, the Democratic Party and the United Development Party (PPP).

The Wahyu-Saeful ticket finished second with 134,166 votes, or 25.73 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, candidate pair Hadi Supeno-Nur Heni came in last with 104,646 votes, or 20.07 percent of the vote.

The Hadi-Nur ticket was supported by a coalition of four parties comprising the National Awakening Party (PKB), the NasDem Party, the Gerindra Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).

Meanwhile, the Wahyu-Saeful ticket was backed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the National Mandate Party (PAN).
