fficers from the Jambi Police have foiled an alleged attempt by an international drug syndicate to distribute a large number of drugs in the province. Five alleged members of the syndicate were arrested by personnel from the police’s narcotics division in an operation on Tuesday.

During the raid, the police confiscated 1.8 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as sabu-sabu, worth around Rp 3 billion (US$ 224,635.20). They also seized 933 ecstasy pills worth around Rp 300 million.

“The crystal meth was from Guangzhou, China, while the ecstasy pills were brought from the Netherlands,” said Jambi Police Brig. Gen. Yazid Fanani on Wednesday.

“It was planned that the drugs would be brought to Lampung,” he went on. Yazid said the police would further investigate the case.

Separately, the Jambi District Court’s judge panel sentenced a drug dealer from Muarojambi to 15 years' imprisonment on Tuesday. The dealer, Budi Indrawan alias Budi Puntung, was arrested in an operation in which 1.4 kg of crystal meth was found.

The panel of judges, led by Mararoda Hafat, said the defendant was proven guilty of possessing drugs weighing more than five grams and a firearm. It charged the defendant of violating Article 112 of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics.

“[...] the defendant was sentenced to 15 years in prison and ordered to pay Rp 1 billion in fines or face an additional four months' imprisonment,” said Makaroda.

The panel gave both the defendant and prosecutors an opportunity to consider the ruling. (ebf)
