T

he selection committee tasked to find a replacement for disgraced Constitutional Court justice Patrialis Akbar has so far only managed to attract three potential candidates as the registration deadline nears.

Six days into the opening of the registration, only three people, none of them high-profile figures, registered to the committee ahead of the deadline on March 3.

Despite this, selection committee chairman Harjono remained hopeful that more people would register in the final days of the registration process.

“It is always a habit that people make up their minds last minute. We will wait until March 3,” Harjono said on Tuesday.

One of the applicants, Sugianto, is a lecturer at Syek Nurjati State Islamic Institute (IAIN) in Cirebon, West Java, while another, Franz Astani, is a notary public. Both applicants registered for their second time after coming up short in the same selection process in 2014.

Harjono said the selection committee would announce the names of the candidates who pass the administration test on March 10. These candidates would then undergo interviews on March. 13-16.

The committee must submit three recommended names to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on March. 31 at the latest.

“The President will pick one of the three names. The President has one week to decide who he will select [to replace Patrialis] one week after the selection committee submits the three names to the State Palace,” Harjono said.

The Constitutional Court dismissed Patrialis after the Corruption Eradication Commission named him a suspect in a bribery case related to a judicial review handled by the court. (rin)
