The incident took place at around 10 a.m. when a small boat with 13 passengers departed from Nusa Lembongan to Toya Pakeh village in Nusa Penida. The small boat crashed into a bigger traditional boat coming from the Kusamba traditional port in Klungkung to Nusa Lembongan near Nusa Ceningan waters, Nusa Penida Police chief Comr. Ketut Suastika said.
Based on witness accounts, the small boat’s captain did not see the traditional boat coming his way as his sight was blocked by a bamboo woven basket near the helm.
“When the crash happened, all passengers in the small boat fell into the water. People from Nusa Ceningan Island tried to help them,” Suastika told The Jakarta Post.
The deceased passenger has been identified as 55-year-old Ni Nengah Sarwi, a Nusa Penida resident. Meanwhile the six passengers who suffered injuries are Ni Ketut Sipi, 59, Ni Ketut Sanita, 18, Ni Kadek Suwastini, 21, Ni Wayan Retin, 65, Unik Erawati, 19, and Ni Wayan Wati, 54.
“Six passengers suffered minor injuries,” Suastika said.
The police have launched a probe into the accident. The police have not yet named any suspects.
