newly established group of city builders called “Red Troops” have been assigned to renovate 55 houses that are in poor condition in Cilincing, North Jakarta, starting April 17.
Housing and Government Building Agency head Arifin said on Friday that from the data gathered by the agency, those houses should be renovated because they were no longer suitable to be inhabited.
However, before renovating them, the administration would first check the house certificates, he said.
“We should check the ownership certificates of those houses and whether they were built in accordance with the zoning map,” Arifin said as quoted by kompas.com.
Meanwhile, Jakarta’s assistant to the secretary for administrative affairs, Bambang Sugiono, said that the renovation project would also engage the “Rainbow Troops”.
Aside from the Red Troops, the administration has formed several other city workers units: “Orange Troops” who are assigned to clean up garbage in neighborhoods, “Blue Troops” who clean rivers, “Yellow Troops” who repair damaged roads and facilities and “Green Troops” who take care of gardens.
Jakarta acting governor Sumarsono has said that the house renovation project was not related to the upcoming gubernatorial election and the project would be funded by the corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.
Previously, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and his running mate Djarot Saiful Hidayat said that they would recruit and employ “Red Troops” when they got back to work after the campaign period ended. (cal)
