akarta Police will hand down harsh sanctions on anyone involved in acts of intimidation of voters or election officials during the Jakarta gubernatorial election runoff on April 19, a senior police officer has said.
“We have received complaints and reports from voters and campaign teams about several indications of acts of intimidation,” said Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. M. Iriawan, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
Iriawan added that police would cooperate with military personnel and the Jakarta General Elections Commission to prevent such acts from happening during the runoff.
He said police would ensure that voters feel safe from any intimidation while exercising their political right.
According to Law No.10/2016 on regional elections, acts of intimidation can be punished with up to six years in prison.
Around 7.2 million voters are called to cast their vote for either candidate pair, the incumbent team Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama – Djarot Saiful Hidayat or their challengers Anies Baswedan – Sandiaga Uno. (kuk/dmr)
