house renovation program initiated by Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama could be discontinued following the change of leadership in October, an official has said.

Public Housing and Settlement Agency Head Arifin said the future of the program falls under the authority of Jakarta’s next governor, adding that there were still chance the program would be continued if winning gubernatorial candidates Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno saw benefits in it.

“The elected governor has full authority on whether [the program] will proceed or not. As assistant to the governor, we will execute his policy,” Arifin said as quoted by kompas.com.

A newly established group of city builders called “Red Troops” have been assigned to renovate 55 dilapidated houses in Cilincing, North Jakarta, starting on April 17.

Based on the agency’s data, these homes were designated for renovation as they are no longer safe and suitable for habitation. However, the administration said it would first check their certificate of ownership before starting the project.

Multiple pollsters declared Anies and Sandiaga as the winning pair of Jakarta’s gubernatorial runoff election on April 9. They are expected to be officially installed in office in October. (dra)
