he Soccer Association of Indonesia has set a list of targets within its 2017-2020 program, that includes winning a gold medal in upcoming Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Kuala Lumpur as well as nailing a fourth place in 2018 Asian Games (Asiad) for its Under-22 squad.
The PSSI met with the House of Representatives Commission X overseeing education, sports and history on Wednesday to give updates on latest situation of Indonesian soccer as well as the association’s working program for 2017-2020, said the association in a statement.
Besides on the U-22 squad, PSSI is also working on grooming its Under-18 team to win gold in AFF Cup in Myanmar, Under-19 to reach 2019 AFC Cup, Under-15 to win gold in AFF Cup in Thailand, Women Team to reach AFF Cup semifinals in Laos and Futsal squad to win gold in AFF Cup in Thailand.
On the current national soccer scene, Indonesia is at 175th in the world’s rankings out of 206 under world’s soccer body, FIFA. The 250 million-populated country has 67,000 soccer players and 197 referees (only five of those referees have FIFA/AFC licenses). Indonesia only has two stadiums with FIFA standard.
In response, the House support PSSI’s programs. It however requested the association to study further on a plan to increase the number of soccer players and referees, as well as on working permits of foreigners involved in the Liga 1 to-tier soccer league.
