Black magic practitioner detained for promoting hate speech

Police have confiscated dozens of  T-shirts and accessories from a  practitioner of Javanese black magic, Ki Gendeng Pamungkas, emblazoned with hateful messages. Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said the items were seized from the  70-year-old 's home in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday afternoon.

olice have confiscated dozens of T-shirts and accessories from a practitioner of Javanese black magic, Ki Gendeng Pamungkas, emblazoned with hateful messages. Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said the items were seized from the 70-year-old 's home in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday afternoon.

Ki Gendeng was also detained and charged under Article 156 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on inciting animosity or hatred toward a particular group and Article 16 of Law No.40/2008 on the elimination of racial and ethnic discrimination.

“Among the seized items are a jacket with words that read ‘fight against China’, 67 T-shirts with ‘anti-China’ words, and a black hat with ‘pribumi’ [indigenous] printed on it,” Argo said in a statement on Wednesday.

The items were allegedly used by Ki Gendeng in one of his videos that went viral. In the video, he reportedly asks people to fight against Indonesians of Chinese descent.

“The case is being investigated by the police’s special crimes investigation directorate,” Argo said.
