T

he local unit of Singapore-based online marketplace Lazada expects to see a significant sales increase during Ramadhan, like in previous years.

Last year, the marketplace saw a significant sales increase during Ramadhan, compared to the sales peak in other months, said Lazada Indonesia’s chief marketing officer Sebastian Sieber.

A similar increase is expected to occur during Ramadhan, this year, said Sebastian, adding that to boost its sales, Lazada would hold flash sales during the fasting month.

“We want to adjust to people’s demands and needs at specific moments, therefore we will start [the flash sale] at 3 a.m. to attract the consumers who visit our site while waiting for sahur (pre-dawn meal),” he said.

The marketplace has seen a demand increase for home and living related items as well as groceries and fashion products during Ramadhan, Sebastian said.

Therefore, the company is offering promotional discounts for those products, he added.

Sebastian said the start of Ramadhan, which coincided with the time of the month when most workers received their monthly pay, provided a sales boost to both online and offline retailers, as people had started to buy goods for Idul Fitri.

“I think sales will increase more in mid-June when people receive their THR [holiday bonus],” Sebastian added. (ecn/bbn)
