ndonesia’s entertainment industry is in mourning after losing another of its talented artists. Yuli Rahmawati, better known as Julia Perez or Jupe, 36, died on Saturday after a long battle with cervical cancer.
Julia revealed to the public that she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer in March 2014. She had apparently recovered in 2015 before being informed her cancer had metastasized and reached Stage 4 in late 2016.
While battling her own cancer, Julia showed her great support and solidarity to other cancer patients, especially women, by clean-shaving her head.
Julia was first known to the public as a dangdut singer in 2008 after the release of her debut album, Kamasutra. She continued her career as an actress by starring in several movies and comedy shows, including Arwah Goyang Karawang (The Dancing Spirit of Karawang). She received several honors. At the 2013 Bandung Film Festival, she was awarded Honorable Best Actress for her role as Malini in a film entitled Gending Sriwijaya.
Aside from her entertainment career, Julia also sought to build a political career by running as a regent candidate in a 2010 regional election in Pacitan regency, East Java. However, Julia’s candidacy ended before she started to campaign after she announced she had pulled off out of the election based on her own decision.
She was widely known for her relationship with Argentinian soccer player Gaston Castaño who played for Indonesian club Persiba. The pair married in 2013, but later divorced in 2016.
Julia was laid to rest at the Pondok Ranggon public cemetery in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Saturday afternoon. (kuk/ebf)
