ales of Honda motorcycles increased by 16 percent year on year (yoy) to 394,000 units in May alone, ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday on June 25-26, according to industry sources.

The festive season also pushed up sales of all motorcycle brands by 15 percent to 531,000 units, according to Thomas Wijaya, the marketing director of Honda’s local arm Astra Honda Motor, quoting Indonesia Motorcycle Producers Association (AISI) data.

“Sales in May were up, apparently due to the festive season and harvest season in Java, when farmers earn more so they buy more, too,” Thomas told reporters during an iftar (snacks for breaking the fast) event in Jakarta on Wednesday.

However, sales for the first five months was hit by low public spending and has yet to see a full recovery after the 2015 crisis led by commodity prices.

Household consumption growth in the first quarter expanded by 4.93 percent, slightly lower than 4.94 percent in the same period last year.

Honda motorcycle sales in January-May was down by 2 percent to 1.74 million units, while overall motorcycle sales further decreased by 5 percent to 2.32 million units.

This year, Honda expects to sell between 4.3 million and 4.5 million units, from 4.38 million units last year, while AISI expects total sales to reach between 5.8 million and 6 million units from 5.9 million units in 2016. (bbn)
