Book worm: Riyanni Djangkaru: ‘It’s a waste to finish a good book quickly’

JP/Tertiani ZB Simanjuntak

An avid traveler who is currently tutoring travel writing classes, Riyanni Djangkaru takes her time reading a book.

The former host of a TV travel show that brought her into the public spotlight and once the chief editor of Dive Magazine Indonesia, the mother of one has a unique habit of going back over a few pages before the one she left before continuing reading.

“It could take me months to finish a book even though I read it every day, because I reread the lines over and over. I always pay attention to the details described in the book and try to picture it in my head before going on to the next page,” said Riyanni, a prominent #SAVESHARKS activist.

“I always feel it’s a shame to finish a good book quickly. I always carry the same book for a long time, bringing it everywhere I go.”

Although she doesn’t set aside a certain budget for books, the 37-year-old always makes time to browse book stores at airports, which she regularly visits, to take a look at sci-fi novels, history-related books — fiction or non-fiction — children’s fairytales and comic books — her preferred reading materials.

A fan of Astrid Lindgren and the comic series Kariage Kun by author Masashi Ueda, Riyanni introduced the authors’ works to her son from early age. Her son, who turns 11 this October, started with comics and recently read Lindgren’s Emil of Lonneberga series.

“When he was about nine-years-old he started to read story books with less pictures,” she said. “But he doesn’t really like Pippi Longstocking, my favorite. It’s good that he has his own preference in books.”

I love these series because of the authors’ creativity for creating unique characters. The titular characters share the same penchant of seeing things, trivial things, in different ways and that’s intriguing.

Seven Brief On Physics

by Carlo Rovelli

It’s a short book that has been translated to 41 languages. Reading these theories on physics regarding the mysteries of the universe is like reading a fairytale, although it’s based on research conducted
by the world’s top physicists.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man...

by Jonas Jonasson

The comic novel — The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared (2009) — is a fictional story about the life and adventures of Allan Karlsson who on his hundredth birthday climbed out the window of his nursing home and disappeared. The author integrated historical facts into the story, which makes it all the more interesting.

Sejarah Kecil 'Pitite Histoire' Indonesia

by Rosihan Anwar

Sejarah Kecil ‘Petite Histoire’ Indonesia (2004) is a collection articles by the late journalist Rosihan Anwar on the history of sociopolitical and economic conditions in the country. The best part about these writings is their ability to point out small, overlooked factors that actually fueled big events.
