Greater jakarta: Fire near East Jakarta market kills boy

A

fire broke out near Kebayoran Lama Market in South Jakarta at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, killing an 11-year-old boy, Agus Gunawan, an official has said.

“A mother shed tears as she was unable to save her son, who was trapped in her burning house,” South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency head Irwan said in a statement on Thursday.

Irwan said Agus was found dead and badly burned when officials from his agency arrived at the scene. The deceased has been taken to the National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta.

“Based on our preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by an electrical short-circuit from a makeshift building in the area,” Irwan said, adding that 21 fire trucks were deployed to the site and it took five hours for them to extinguish the flames.

The late response from state power company PLN to turn off the electricity to the vicinity allegedly fueled the fire, kompas.com reported.

Irwan said the incident had inflicted Rp 1 billion (US$75,069) in losses and caused 80 people to lose their homes.
