coalition of human rights watchdogs has reminded the team assigned to select new members for the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) to promote accountability in the selection process.
Leaders with perfect knowledge of and high dedication to upholding human rights values in all walks of life are crucial to make Komnas HAM a strong, reliable and trustworthy institution, says the coalition.
“Komnas HAM has the key role of preventing the state from exercising a totalitarian leadership, to which the current government seems to be heading,” Indonesian Legal Aid and Human Rights Association (PBHI) director Totok Yulianto, the coalition’s coordinator, said Sunday.
“A weak and toothless Komnas HAM will open the door for a totalitarian state,” he added.
Led by prominent law professor and former Constitutional Court chief justice Jimly Asshidiqie, the team has chosen 28 candidates to undergo final interviews slated for next week. The team will later select 14 finalists who will undergo fit-and-proper tests with the House of Representatives’ Commission III overseeing law and human rights in October this year.
