India and Pakistan celebrated the 70th anniversary of their independence days with separate flag-hoisting ceremonies in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The two countries gained independence on Aug. 15, 1947 when the British Crown transferred power and sovereignty to their respective constituent assemblies in New Delhi and Islamabad.
To mark the event, India’s Deputy Chief of Mission Manish told an audience of 100 or more at the Embassy of India that his country has set milestones for a “New India,” which would include compassion and egalitarianism and the “integral humanist component that is in our DNA and which has defined our country and our civilization.”
Manish said that as India celebrates the 70 years since its first independence day the government is striving to build a new India for every citizen living in India and abroad.
“What do we mean [by a] New India? There are some obvious parameters like a house for every family, power on demand, better roads and telecom, a modern railway network, rapid and sustained growth,” Manish said.
“For this [the independence of India] we owe so much to the countless freedom fighters who made great sacrifices to bring us here,” said Manish.
He said the dream for a free India was rooted in a desire to help the poor and underprivileged.
“This spirit of empathy and social service and volunteerism is very much alive in India. There are so many people and organizations that work quietly and diligently for the poor and the disadvantaged,” said Manish.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s embassy in Jakarta celebrated the 70th anniversary of its Independence Day with, according to an official press release, “national fervor and enthusiasm […] in a simple but impressive ceremony attended by a large number of members of the Pakistani community.”
The function commenced on Monday morning with the hoisting of the Pakistani flag by the Ambassador of Pakistan Mohammad Aqil Nadeem. Messages from the president and the prime minister of Pakistan were then read.
Speaking to the community members, the ambassador highlighted the significance of Independence Day. He also stated that bilateral political and economic relations between Pakistan and Indonesia received a boost from the removal of Pakistan from the list of countries whose citizens required Indonesian calling visas.
“This development would indeed help in increasing people to people interaction between the two countries,” the release said, adding that the ambassador also hoped a planned visit by President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo would open a new chapter in relations.
