Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has instructed his subordinates to publicly display photos of people caught throwing garbage into rivers.
“I have instructed the environmental agency to accelerate the sting operation on haphazard garbage dumping. If they catch someone throwing garbage into a river, they must take a picture of the person and put it on an installed banner,” he said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.
He added that such a measure was being taken to show people’s bad habits.
The banner, he further explained, would be installed in their residential area as a form of social punishment.
“In such a way, we all can take care of Jakarta. […] We should feel pity for our contract cleaners who work in rivers starting in the morning to clear them of garbage,” Djarot said, adding that the officials often saw residents on motorcycles throw plastic bags of trash into rivers.
