llegal parking remains rampant around the Gelora Bung Karno sports compound in Central Jakarta, and the city administration will have to step up its efforts in order to eliminate such practices, a transportation agency official said on Thursday.
The sports complex falls under the purview of the State Secretariat but is managed by the Gelora Bung Karno Complex Management Center (PPKGBK).
Jakarta Transportation Agency deputy head Sigit Widjatmoko said that his agency could step in to put an end to illegal parking by targeting the “thugs” allegedly behind the practice, only if the PPKGBK asked them for help.
“If they ask for our assistance, we can crack down on those thugs,” he said, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
Separately, Central Jakarta Transportation Agency head Harlem Simanjuntak said that the practices could be eliminated by involving the police. The police’s role, Harlem added, was needed to create a deterrent effect.
“We cannot handle [the task] ourselves because the stadium has its own management. If we want to eliminate illegal parking fees, we should involve the police because we do not have the authority to arrest anybody,” Harlem said. (rdi)
