n line with the city administration's plan to widen sidewalks along Jl. Sudirman and Jl Thamrin, several officers from the Jakarta Forestry, Park and Cemeteries Agency began to remove trees on Senayan traffic circle and Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, on Saturday.
The workers only removed trees located in the median between the slow and fast lanes on Jl. Sudirman, but left trees on the sidewalk. The workers pruned the trees first before uprooting them to be moved to other locations.
Previously, Jakarta secretary Saefullah said the removal was related to the sidewalk project, which will kick off on Oct. 8.
Some 500 trees are to be removed. Trees in a good condition will be planted temporarily in the nurseries in Ciganjur and Ragunan in South Jakarta, Cibubur in East Jakarta, Kelapa Gading or BMW Park in North Jakarta, while older trees will be cut down.
"There will be a major restoration along Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin. We apologize to residents because we have to move the trees soon," Saefullah said, as quoted by kompas.com.
The administration has launched the sidewalk project in the hope of making the capital become a pedestrian-friendly city. The city will not only relocate trees along Jl. Sudirman, but it also plans to remove fences, which usually separate buildings from the street. (rdi)
