The woman who committed suicide at Blok M Square Mall, South Jakarta, had been a lecturer from the Philippines, the police said.

Kebayoran Baru Police said they have been in touch with the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta about the incident. The women has been identified as Lorena C Binay-an, 39.

"From a card carried by her, it was found that she had been a lecturer at Isabela State University in the Philippines and this was confirmed by an embassy official who visited the scene,” said Comr. Subowo, the police’s criminal unit head, as quoted by Kompas.com on Wednesday.

The police said she had been a tourist who stayed at Wisma Delima on Jl Jaksa, Menteng, Central Jakarta.

“The embassy doesn’t know her home address yet and is currently coordinating with the Philippines’ Foreign Affair Ministry [on the case],” Subowo added.

Lorena jumped to her death from the mall’s fifth floor on Monday evening.

Before the suicide, she left her bag near a snack kiosk on the fifth floor. The owner told the police that the woman had walked back and forth aimlessly in front of the kiosk before jumping. (agn)
