A small tornado damaged 20 houses on Jl. Raya Panggkalan II in Sumurbatu, Bekasi, West Java, on Sunday afternoon.
No casualties were reported, but the disaster resulted in Rp 60 million (US$4,431.6) in losses, the Bekasi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said.
Bekasi BPBD deputy head Karsono said that three houses were heavily damaged by the tornado. “Seven of the 20 houses have been repaired,” he said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Monday.
He said the calamity occurred during heavy downpour that lasted an hour in the area. Residents, fearing the tornado would tear down their houses, immediately went outside to look for safe places, he added.
Locals and officials from the agency rushed to the site, providing food and bedding to the victims. They also assisted the victims in repairing their houses.
He warned the public to remain vigilant as the rainy season had begun.
Meanwhile,The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that a phenomenon called waterspout tornado had occurred in the waters off Thousand Islands.
