meeting on oceanography and marine meteorology held by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has been moved to Geneva, Switzerland, from its initial venue in Bali, following an increase in the volcanic activity of Mount Agung.
The Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM-5) meeting kicked off on Wednesday and is scheduled to end on Sunday. It aims to address global issues related to climate change.
“The threat of an imminent eruption of one of Indonesia’s active volcanoes forced the relocation of the 5th joint commission meeting from Bali to Geneva,” said the event organizer in a statement obtained by The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
“[The threat] is a prescient reminder that the country faces a unique challenge in its development,” Andy Eka Sakya, an Indonesian representative in the meeting, said as quoted in the statement.
The Indonesian government has continuously warned residents to stay away from areas within the eruption danger zone of Mt. Agung.
Thousands of people in Bali were evacuated from their villages when the warning level of the volcano was increased to “alert,” the highest level, on Sept. 22. (ebf)
