house in Tamalanrea district in Makassar, South Sulawesi, caught fire on Wednesday night. Three people died in the incident.
The bodies of Nursiah, 70, Fitri, 35, and Rafada, 2, were buried on Thursday.
Located in a densely populated area, the house was nearly destroyed. Seven fire trucks were deployed to the scene after locals reported the fire at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
The fire was extinguished before it spread to neighboring homes.
Mochamad Hasanuddin, operational head of the Makassar Fire and Rescue Agency, said all three victims were found dead in the bathroom.
It was suspected the fire was caused by lit candles. The area had been experiencing blackouts the morning of the incident.
“After sunset, residents lit candles. Maybe the candles fell and started the fire,” said Tamalanrea Police chief Comr. Syamsul Bachri.
Syamsul said a team from the forensics lab of the South Sulawesi Police had been deployed to examine the scene.
