Singapore’s Warehouse Hotel brings together hospitality, history and conservation

Singaporean hospitality firm The Lo & Behold Group has just officially inaugurated its latest property called the Warehouse Hotel, which showcases a heritage concept, on the bank of the Singapore River.

The property was rehabilitated architecturally by homegrown agency Asylum and local firm Zarch Collaboratives, while conserving its vintage characteristics. Asylum founder and head designer Chris Lee has turned the space into a stylish and enigmatic place reminiscent of the original look the building has had since it was still part of Singapore’s thriving spice trade.

The decor and furnishings of the hotel, meanwhile, combine a bygone era with modern-day Singapore, resulting in an industrial yet warm vibe to it. “Our focus has been to protect the property’s legacy while creating a fresh perspective on the term ‘industrial.’ The environment is warm and sophisticated in order to prevent it from being too obviously grounded in what has been before,” Lee said.

The hotel possesses 37 rooms across six categories designed in muted tones, with a lot of them offering double-high ceilings. The rooms feature the hotel’s signature triple-pitched roof and original masonry walls, complementing the building’s existing layout to create a contrast effect.

Its lobby bar and reception area, meanwhile, are suitable places where you can just relax and rejuvenate in its relaxing atmosphere, while the rooftop infinity swimming pool overlooking the river provides a surprisingly calm escape amid the urban landscape surrounding the hotel.

The lobby bar features in-house cocktail programs offering homemade alcohol infusions and essences. Paying homage to three distinct eras of the hotel’s past, the eclectic beverage menu is a journey through each transformation that the hotel has undergone: guests will enjoy a taste of the spice trade, drink up the underbelly of illegal distilleries and finally immerse themselves in the 1980s when the building hosted Singapore’s most famous disco of the era.

The hotel also collaborated with local creative industry to supply its eating and drinking utensils as well as furniture. For instance, the hotel’s in-room coffee and tea mugs have been provided by Mud Rock, a local ceramic studio.

The rooms’ minibars offer Southeast Asian products comprising three categories – “gluttony” includes handcrafted salted egg yolk potato chips and Vietnamese dark chocolate; “lust” for saucy treats and “vanity” for local beauty elixirs.

The hotel’s front desk area is decorated in a very artistic manner as well: it features an installation featuring artworks curated by local furniture craftsman Gabriel Tan in collaboration with Edwin Low from Singaporean online store Supermama.

The unique, hard-to-find items are the same as the ones that would have been used by the original owners of the old warehouse in which the hotel now stands. Lighters, ashtrays, flasks, bicycles, guidebooks, coffee and tea selections are also made by Singaporean creators to help guests reminisce about the old times.

The hotel’s concierge team, meanwhile, are more than happy to provide recommendations on local travel attractions that guests will find unforgettable and cannot be found outside Singapore.
