he government plans to integrate the electronic data capture (EDC) services of three state-owned lenders – Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Bank Mandiri and Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI).
The State-owned Enterprises Ministry said holders of ATM cards of the banks would be able to conduct transactions through the integrated EDC devices without paying any fees.
“There is no fee for EDC transactions,” the ministry’s undersecretary in charge of financial, survey and consultancy services, Gatot Trihargo, said in Jakarta on Monday, as reported by kompas.com.
With the integration of EDC services, each merchant only needed one EDC device [for transactions through any of the three state-owned banks], Gatot said, adding that the unused EDC devices would be collected to be redistributed to other merchants, who were not yet using such devices.
Gatot explained that the principle of the EDC integration was similar to the integration of state-owned lenders ATMs into ATM Link, which been proven to cut costs and investment needs, because the lenders were spending less money on ATMs.
“We have 60,000 ATMs this year, distributed in many areas. We will not purchase more ATMs. The number of EDCs is 300,000 or more,” he added. (bbn)
