ailway maintenance work currently taking place between Kebayoran Station in South Jakarta and Pondok Ranji Station in South Tangerang, Banten, has disrupted commuter train operations in the past four days.
Trains traveling between the Kebayoran and Pondok Ranji stations have been moving at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, a significant decrease from 60 to 70 kilometers per hour normally, resulting in packed train cars and longer commute times for passengers.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) operation region 1 spokesman Suprapto said the maintenance work, which is expected to be finished in two weeks, was necessary to ensure the continuous operation of trains during the rainy season.
Railway tracks were previously often submerged in water as a result of flooding, he said.
“We’re now doing maintenance work on the railway and elevating the track to prevent it from being flooded,” Suprapto said on Thursday.
PT KAI apologized for any inconvenience caused by the railway work, he said.
Various services were canceled on Tuesday after a truck was stuck on a railway track following an accident near Palmerah Station in West Jakarta.
