he Jakarta administration has discontinued the release of videos of executive meetings on the internet because it is unhappy with the reaction of the public to the videos, Deputy Jakarta Governor Sandiaga Uno has said.
Sandiaga confirmed the discontinuation on Sunday, despite a 2016 gubernatorial regulation that mandated the city administration to upload video recordings to ensure public accessibility to public policy and decision making; as well as to create a more transparent, effective, efficient and accountable city administration.
He stressed that people often took the videos out of context and created internet memes out of them. “People will edit our [governor and deputy governor] faces and turn them into memes. Sometimes people also say that we're not strict enough, that we don't do our jobs well,” Sandiaga said as quoted by kompas.com.
He further said that people who wanted to get access to the videos should send formal requests to the city’s Communications and Information and Statistics Agency.
“We intend to be more open toward the public, but what is the point if our videos are used to attack each other? We want to embrace people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Let's not create more unnecessary friction, because soon it will be Christmas and the New Year,” Sandiaga added.
The executive meeting videos were regularly uploaded on YouTube under the “Pemprov DKI Jakarta” channel during the leadership of former governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama. The most recent video was uploaded on Oct. 23. (dpk)
