etting the stage for a thrilling Rahul Gandhi vs Narendra Modi battle in India's 2019 General Elections, the Gandhi scion was on Monday declared the new chief of the Congress party.

Indian Congress spokesperson MM Ramachandran said that Rahul was elected unopposed and will be taking over the top post on December 16 at a formal ceremony at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in the national capital at 11 a.m..

The 47-year-old President-elect will be taking over the reins from his mother Sonia Gandhi, who held the top post for 19 years being elected the Congress chief in 1998.

The elevation of Rahul Gandhi, who is presently spearheading the Congress campaign ahead of the Dec. 9 and 14 Gujarat assembly polls, has been much talked about in party circles for around two years.

Rahul Gandhi became the Congress Vice President in January 2013.
