t least 50 stray cats suspected to have destroyed plants owned by residents of Penjaringan, North Jakarta, have been captured, an official said on Friday.
North Jakarta Fisheries, Agriculture and Food Security Agency head Rita Nirmala said that, due to the large number of stray cats in the area, her subordinates failed to capture all of them in one day. Personnel from the agency are therefore scheduled to hunt for the remaining cats next month.
“Because of the numerous stray cats in the area, we will reschedule a hunt next month,” she said on Friday as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
The captured cats were brought to an animal health center in Ragunan, South Jakarta, where they will be examined for rabies. The healthy and rabies-free cats will be put up for adoption.
“Citizens interested in adopting the cats can go to the animal health center every Wednesday,” Rita added.
Separately, a Penjaringan resident, Imron, said that because the cats had destroyed their plants, he and his neighbors reported them to a related agency. “We are grateful that the officials responded to our complaint fast,” said the 41-year-old man. (vny)
