he Jakarta administration will assume the expenses of an upcoming Christmas celebration at the National Monument (Monas), Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno has said.
“This [Christmas celebration] is our event, this is our idea, we will cover the expenses,” Sandiaga said on Thursday night, adding that Christian representatives who attended a meeting at City Hall to discuss the event said the idea was a first for the city administration.
However, Sandiaga did not elaborate on whether the funds for the event would come from the regional budget or from sponsors.
“It depends on the organizer’s preparations. We expect the participation [of sponsors], but with or without a sponsor, the administration will make sure the event is a success,” he said.
Sandiaga said Christian representatives who attended the meeting at City Hall said they expected 12,000 attendees to participate in the celebration.
Earlier this month, Governor Anies Baswedan announced the plan to organize the Christmas celebration.
The Monas Park became a spot for religious activities with Islamic groups holding events there on Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and Dec. 2. Anies previously revised a gubernatorial regulation, which stipulated that Monas should be a neutral venue and banned people from holding religious and cultural ceremonies in the park. (gis)
