undreds of stilt houses in Muara Baru Ujung, Penjaringan, North Jakarta caught fire Saturday morning.

Fire and Rescue Management Agency subdivision head, Satriadi Gunawan, said the fire started at a complex of stilt houses along the river bank near Muara Baru fish market around 01:20 a.m.

Eighteen fire trucks from North Jakarta, with help from two fire trucks from West Jakarta, were utilized to put out the blaze.

“We managed to put out the fire an hour later,” Satriadi said. It was difficult to extinguish, because a very large number of buildings had caught fire.

The inferno covered an approximately 3,000 square meter area.

The fire reportedly started because a short circuit in one of the houses, and spread to engulf the surrounding buildings.

A resident, identified as Agus Sunarga, 21, suffered a minor injury. Material losses caused by the fire are still being calculated.
