ollowing the collapse of a school building in West Jakarta on Thursday, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) conducted a field inspection at state junior high school SMPN 32 Jakarta on Friday morning.
Three people were reportedly injured in the incident.
Aside from the collapsed hall, KPAI also noted four classrooms that did not meet the national education standard as they were too narrow. KPAI also found that the number of toilets was disproportionate to the number of students.
According to the statement released by KPAI, the school had already requested Jakarta's Education Agency and Tourism Agency to renovate the building in 2014. A representative from the Tourism Agency came to check the school building's condition last Monday, however, neither approved the request because of the building's cultural heritage status. The building is said to be built in 1880.
KPAI commissioner for education Retno Listyarti urged the city administration to move the students to a safer building until the school building is renovated. "It would be dangerous for the students to keep studying in a place like this," she said in a statement. (dpk)
