T SGMW Motor Indonesia, a subsidiary of the Chinese joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Company Limited, has launched two Cortez models under the Wuling Motors brand on Thursday at the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta.

The Wuling Cortez C and Wuling Cortez L are seven-seater multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) fitted with a 1,800 cc engine that comes in two transmission options, Automated Manual Transmission (i-AMT) and a six-speed manual transmission. Prices start at Rp 218 million (US$15,979) for the Cortez C to Rp 264 million for the Cortez L.

“We want to offer Indonesian people a new choice. You can compare the features of our new product with other brands,” Cindy Cai, Wuling Motors' vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing, said  on Thursday.

Cai said more than 600 potential buyers had preordered the Cortez models since the company's initial announcement on Jan. 8.

She added that the company expected to sell 30,000 units of the Wuling Cortez and Wuling Confero, which were manufactured at its Cikarang factory in West Java. The factory has an annual production capacity of 120,000 vehicles.

SGMW Motor Indonesia claims that 50 percent of the components for the Wuling Cortez and 56 percent of the components for the Wuling Confero comes from local suppliers.

The company announced in July 2017 its first MPV line, the Confero, which comes with a 1,500 cc engine and a price range of Rp 128.8 million to Rp 162.9 million. (ami/bbn)
