Island focus: Nazaruddin throws dirt on faction heads

F

ormer Democratic Party politician Muhammad Nazaruddin revealed in a court hearing on Monday that every then-leader of political party factions in the House of Representatives accepted money embezzled from the budget earmarked for the e-ID procurement project.

In his testimony as a witness against defendant Setya Novanto at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday, the graft convict said the idea to disburse the illicit funds to House’s faction leaders came from the late-Golkar Party politician Mustokoweni.

“According to Mustokoweni and Andi’s report, each [disbursement to faction leaders] had been realized,” Nazaruddin told the court, referring to businessman and graft convict Andi Agustinus.

The court declared Andi guilty in December for playing a major role in the high profile e-ID graft case, which reportedly caused Rp 2.3 trillion (US$169 million) in state losses, and sentenced him to eight years’ imprisonment.

Nazaruddin, who served as Democratic Party treasurer, added that the total funds allegedly received by the political factions varied from the total budget of Rp 5.9 trillion for the project.

However, Nazaruddin claimed he had forgotten how the money was allocated.

In the KPK’s indictment of Setya, a number of lawmakers were also mentioned for having accepted embezzled money from the e-ID project budget.

The former DPR speaker and Golkar chairman has been indicted on suspicions of having played a major role in the e-ID graft case.
