he recent conflict between Pakistan and India as well as Iran fighting back against Israel have shown the importance for a country to deploy a strong air defense system to defend its national interests.
An air defense system is a complex organism, one made up of many overlapping layers, with all sorts of weapons, radars and sensors, imbricated to detect and neutralize any aerial threats. The range of possible threats is wide, from micro and mini unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, jet fighters to various types of missiles, and often, multiple elements in conjunction.
During the 2024 Indo Defense Expo and Forum, Turkish defense electronics giant Aselsan showcased its integrated air defense system, known as the Steel Dome.
“Aselsan is the main air defense supplier of our region,” Aselsan chief executive officer and president Ahmet Akyol said on June 12.
“We have separately delivered systems before, the long range, medium range, short range, very short range, gun-based and missile-based [weapons].”
Akyol said that Aselsan also had early warning radars, electronic warfare, signal intelligence systems and optical sensors.
“What we are doing now is to make all of them integrated in the one digital network under the umbrella of software which is supported by AI [artificial intelligence] features,” he said.
