T

he National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested three men during a drug raid in Medan, North Sumatra, on Sunday, while another suspect died after being shot.

The agency suspected the four men of being part of a Malaysia-Aceh-Medan narcotics syndicate. They were arrested over the alleged possession of 79,905 ecstasy pills and 15 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

"The ecstasy pills, which were packed in 14 sacks, and the 15.53 kg of crystal meth, were seized in two locations, the Antara Hotel in Medan and their house, which is also located in the city," BNN said in its report released on Tuesday.

"During the raid, one suspect, identified as Amri, the coordinator of the drug distribution, was shot in his chest after he tried to resist arrest. He died on the way to the hospital,"

The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police and the North Sumatra police.

BNN spokesman Comr. Sulistiandriatmoko said on Tuesday the arrests came shortly after a total of 2.9 tons of crystal meth was seized by BNN from two vessels during separate raids this month.

In 2017, BNN confiscated 4.71 tons of crystal meth, 151.22 tons of marijuana and 2.9 million ecstasy pills, equal to 627.84 kg.

BNN arrested 58,365 drug suspects and 34 money-laundering suspects in 2017, with 79 suspects being shot and killed by the agency's personnel during drug raids. The shoot-to-kill policy was strongly advised by the BNN chief Budi Waseso to act as a deterrent effect to drug dealers.  (srs/ebf)
