T

he House of Representatives has blamed the government for the standoff on the election of the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU)’s commissioners, saying the latter had failed to appoint independent members to the selection team for the commissioner candidates.

Deputy chairman of the House's Commission VI, overseeing trade and investment, Azam Natawijaya said in Jakarta on Wednesday that a number of selection team members had conflicts of interests regarding the KPPU.

“The selection team was not independent. We in Commission VI have demanded a change in the selection team,” said Azam as reported by kontan.co.id.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Wednesday extended the office term of the current KPPU commissioners for the second time after the House failed to elect any of the 18 commissioner candidates he submitted on Nov. 22, 2017.

The President called on the House to immediately conduct fit and proper tests for the 18 KPPU commissioner candidates.

Discussing the independence of the selection team, Azam said that selection team chairperson Hendri Saparini was also a commissioner of state-owned telecommunications company PT Telkom, which was involved in a business dispute handled by the KPPU.

Adam added that selection team member Renaldo Kasali was a commissioner of state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II), a company involved in a business dispute handled by the KPPU.

Meanwhile, Azam said another selection team member, Ine Minara S.Ruky, was an expert who was involved in a dispute handled by KPPU.

Azam, however, said Commission VI would meet on March 6 to discuss the continuation of the KPPU commissioner election. (bbn)
