adjah Mada University’s energy efficient urban concept car team, SEMAR, is set to compete in the Drivers' World Championship (DWC) in London on July 8.
The team will represent Asia after it won first place at the Asian championship in Singapore last month.
“At the world level, we will face tough competition from teams from Europe and the United States,” team manager Antonius Adhika told journalists at the university on Tuesday.
Adhika said its SEMAR gasoline urban concept car was a four-wheel prototype with mileage of 267 kilometers per liter of gasoline.
The team used composite carbon fiber to create a strong, but light body weighing 80 kilograms in total.
“[We wanted to make] it as light as possible, with the best setting and a unique shape,” said Adhika.
The team’s supervisor, Jayan Sentanuhady, said the DWC was the most prestigious automotive competition in the world for university students, adding that it does not only test for speed, but also the participating cars’ energy efficient levels.
“This is the challenge. We have to mind the speed and at the same time it also has to be energy efficient,” Jayan said.
The university’s rector, Panut Mulyono, congratulated the team for winning the Asia championship and hoped that it would get the best result at the world competition in London.
Panut also called for a future collaboration involving the government and investors to mass produce the car. (swd)
