tate-owned energy company Pertamina has said it will still be selling subsidized gasoline of the 88-RON type when the country hosts the Asian Games 2018 in August and the IMF-World Bank meeting in October, despite calls to replace it with more environmentally friendly fuel.
The company needed to go through a number of stages to eliminate the subsidized gasoline – sold under the brand Premium – from the market, said Pertamina senior vice president for fuel marketing Gigih Wahyu in Jakarta on Tuesday.
“Premium will be sold during the Asian Games. We are not ready yet. There are stages [to eliminate Premium],” Giging said, as reported by tribunnews.com.
In late March, 2017, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya sent a letter to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, advising the President to eliminate Premium gasoline from the market during the two events to reduce air pollution in related cities.
The minister also demanded the use of Euro-4 standard gasoline, particularly for vehicles used in the cities hosting the events.
Gigih said Pertamina had discussed the gradual elimination of Premium and the use of Euro 4 with Minister Siti.
Meanwhile, Siti confirmed that she had agreed to give Pertamina more time to prepare facilities for the use of Euro 4 fuels.
“We have discussed the use of Euro 4 with Pertamina and the Industry Ministry. There should be a transition period and an exemption for certain vehicles,” she said. (bbn)
