he police have arrested two car thieves in Kramatjati, East Jakarta, with the help of the car’s GPS device that was actively recording the car’s position.
The suspected thieves, identified as Helmi Ibrahim and Rilo Candra, attempted to steal a hatchback belonging to Muhammad Aritamma at his car rental in Cililitan. They had earlier rented the car and made a copy of its keys.
They returned at night and broke into the business.
“They broke into the car garage at 2 a.m. The victim’s neighbor texted him when he saw that the garage was empty,” said Kramatjati Police chief Comr. Nurdin A. Rahman on Wednesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The owner informed the police and tracked down his car through the information from the GPS tracker installed in the car. The car was found in the Cipayung area.
“The [alleged] perpetrators tried to escape when they were discovered. People in the area helped stop them,” said Nurdin.
They told the police that it was the first time they had tried to steal a car. They planned to sell it in Bekasi. (wit)
