he chairman of the country's second-largest Islamic organization Muhammadiyah, Haedar Nashir, has encouraged members to exercise their voting rights in regional elections, which take place on Wednesday.
"Cast your vote responsibly," Haedar said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday.
He further encouraged Muhammadiyah members to participate actively in every step of the elections, such as by being critical and voting wisely.
Haedar said if differences of opinions occurred, Muhammadiyah members should demonstrate respect for each other, maintain public order and preserve national unity.
He called on members to vote for competent and visionary candidates who were not corrupt, could work with all elements of society and were devoted to serving the people.
Haedar said regional elections were a crucial political process to choose regional leaders. Furthermore, a regional election is also a key aspect in improving and boosting the prosperity of people in the regions, he went on to say.
"That's why all sides should participate in making the regional elections successful," he said. (stu/ebf)
